Zodiac Signs

As the Earth revolves around a fixed path or orbit around the Sun, it appears, from the Earth, as though the Sun moves on its own elliptical path, tracing the Earth’s revolution. This apparent path of the Sun is called the ecliptic. The zodiac is a ring of twelve 30° sectors or divisions of celestial longitude that are gathered upon this ecliptic.

Derived from the Greek word “zodiakos” which literally stands for “circle of animals”, zodiac signs are addressed with a variety of names such as sun signs, star signs or astronomical signs.

Famous Indian astrologers in India claim that zodiac signs are closely analogous to the sun and the planets of the solar system. The planets that are associated with them have a high influence on them which provides them their exclusive and unmatched characteristics.

The Earth was made through the mélange of the four basic elements of nature, as explained by the top astrologers from India, that include earth, fire, air and water. Furthermore, each of the zodiac signs are ruled by one of these elements that further adds to their unique features. Also, signs that are governed by Earth or Water are considered introvert and negative while signs governed by Air or Fire are considered extrovert and positive.

The correct knowledge of one’s sun signs provides them with an insight about themselves. They can procure the reasons behind their habits, tendencies and behavior. Many experienced astrologers state that through the knowledge about zodiac signs that they have gained, they have concluded that certain signs get along better than others. They claim that signs ruled by the element of earth get along better with signs ruled by the element of water. Similarly, signs governed by the element of fire get along well with the element of air.

There are twelve zodiac signs namely - Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces.

Ruling Planets and Zodiac Signs

It is believed that every zodiac sign is ruled by a planet i.e. the lord of that sun sign. Following are the zodiac signs and their corresponding ruling planets, as per the common understanding.

Aries – Mars
Taurus – Venus
Gemini – Mercury
Cancer – Moon
Leo – Sun
Virgo – Mercury
Libra – Venus
Scorpio – Mars
Sagittarius – Jupiter
Capricorn – Saturn
Aquarius – Saturn

What is noteworthy in this is that the Sun and the Moon rule only one zodiac sign while the five planets rule two sun signs each. Western and Vedic astrologers also go by the same belief. However, there are different vantage points regarding the lunar nodes (rahu/ketu). Top Indian Astrologers concur that Aquarius is ruled by Rahu. Indian Astrology – A Brief History

As per the available records that exist, the origin of astrology in India can be tracked back to as far back as 6,500 BC. The presence of manuscripts written around 3,700 BC is an indication of the fact that a well-oiled and advanced system of knowledge of astrology was prevalent in ancient India. Despite the fact that a string of original documents were destroyed or lost, many actual copies of these originals, composed by later astrologers, can be found in the libraries of Maharajas and in the various libraries spread across different states in India.

The detailed and comprehensive records of astrological science are available from about 6,500 BC. One of the earliest authors of Vedic astrology, copies of whose work are still to be found, is Pita Maha who wrote a panoptic disquisition on astrology called Pita Maha Siddhanta. He compiled this book around 3,000 BC.  After five hundred years, another author-astrologer Vashishta wrote a clutch of books on astrology, astronomy and philosophy. His most celebrated work which was used as a rallying point by almost all subsequent writers on the subject is Vashishta Siddhanta. He also whipped up copious other books like Panch Siddhanta Kosha, Soorya Siddhanta, and Nityananda which were cerebral and incisive. Parasara’s Hora Sashtra and Varahamihara’s Brihat Jathaka are deemed as the cornerstone of Vedic Astrology.

There are a string of afflictions and diseases – physical and mental – which people encounter on a daily basis. Some of them which conventional medical science has not been able to get the grasp of are effectively treated by auxiliaries of astrological sciences like Ayurveda, Yoga, Pranic healing, acupressure, acupuncture and herbal medicines.
